With its specially-designated Kids Zone and comprehensive
mini tennis programme, Letchworth Tennis Club encourages
children to start playing as soon as they can walk
and hold a racket!
Pre-school mini tennis
Ages 3-4
These sessions introduce children to tennis through
a series of practices and exercises which encourage
athletic and technical development. Each child must
be accompanied by a parent. Parents are encouraged
to practice the exercises with the children in between
sessions to aid their development.
Mini Tennis Red,
Orange and Green
Courses
Mini Tennis describes forms of tennis suitable
for children not yet old enough or able to play
on a full-size court with regular tennis balls.
The club operates three levels of mini tennis group
coaching at each of the Red, Orange and Green levels.
These are club, development and team. Club level
is for players new to tennis or players who have
yet to learn to play a game at the appropriate level.
Development level is for players who have already
undergone some training or who are already able
to play a game at their level but are still developing
their basic technical and tactical skills. Team
level is for players able to play a competent game
at their level and demonstrating sound technical,
tactical, mental and physical development for their
age. Players at this level will be representing
the club’s mini tennis teams in local leagues.
Players at all levels are encouraged to receive
individual as well as group training to enhance
their skills.
Mini Tennis Red Ages
5-7 Please see current timetable
for course days and times.
Mini Tennis Red is the first level of mini tennis,
played on a court approximately 12m x 6m in size,
using sponge or foam balls. Players at this age
should already be learning to compete and should
be mastering the technical skills required to play
the game. The club’s floodlit Kids Zone has
four specifically designated Mini Tennis Red courts
- ideal for practicing with your children.
Mini Tennis Orange
Ages 7-9 Please see current timetable
for course days and times.
Mini Tennis Orange is the next stage up from Mini
Red. Mini Tennis Orange is played on a court 6m
shorter than a regular tennis court and uses transition
tennis balls, which are lighter in weight, lower
in compression and therefore easier for children
to use. Players at this stage should be continuing
to master tennis’ core technical and competitive
skills while adapting to a larger court area.
Mini Tennis Green
Ages 8-11 Please see current timetable
for course days and times.
Mini Tennis Green is the final stage of mini tennis
before a player moves on to regular tennis. Played
on a full size court, the key feature of mini tennis
green is that it uses lower compression balls, which
are easier for players to control and have less
impact on the body.
