Tennis Coaching
All junior group coaching and training is held
indoors on our three superb KushionCourt courts.
These courts are endorsed by the Lawn Tennis Association
as the optimum training surface for young tennis
players.
12-week courses run three times a year alongside
school terms (except for Pre-School Mini Tennis).
Courses must be booked and paid for in advance.
Places on each course are limited. Course descriptions
are for general guideline purposes only.
We want to help all junior players develop their
skills for the long term so that they can enjoy
tennis as a lifelong leisure activity. We believe
that anyone can learn to play the game and that
players develop in different ways during their youth.

Additional Information
There are two levels to the Junior Club Group Coaching
programme – Junior Club Group and Team Squad
sessions.
Junior Club Group sessions are
for junior players of 11 years and up who may have
missed out on mini tennis or who are starting the
game at a relatively late age. These players will
not yet be competing regularly but wish to receive
guidance from coaches and practice within a structured
set-up. It may also be that these players have no
ambition to learn to compete at tennis – they
just wish to improve and meet other players. These
courses in the younger age groups will focus on
developing the fundamental technical and tactical
skills needed for tennis. The older age groups will
involve more movement, drills and practice of tactical
situations.
Team Squad sessions group players
of a similar age and ability level. These players
will have demonstrated a commitment to competition
and are likely to be playing 2-3 times a week all-year
round. Most players in these squads will also be
receiving individual coaching. These players will
also be representing the club’s junior teams
in the various county leagues and competitions.
High standards of training are expected from players
in these squads. Coaches will place more emphasis
on performance factors. Any new players wishing
to join a Team Squad must first receive an assessment
to ensure that they meet the required level.
A guide to age groups
The age groups shown for groups and squads are
for guideline purposes only. There may be cases
where players fit into other age groups. For example
an outstanding 15 yr. old may be invited into the
U18 Boys Team Squad, or a promising 12 year old
may be accepted into the U11 Team Squad if he is
not yet up to the standard required for the U12
Team Squad.
More tennis opportunities for junior players
Letchworth Tennis Club encourages its juniors to
find suitable practice partners and come down and
use the club as often as they like. The club currently
runs a Junior Club Night on Monday from 5.00 –
7.00pm. This session is supervised by a coach and
players are grouped with others of similar playing
ability and encouraged to mix in and play some games.
The club is also launching a Junior Challenge for
its junior members. Under this format, all junior
club members are grouped together with other players
of a similar playing level. Players’ contact
details are provided and players are encouraged
to contact each other and have a game down at the
club. This Junior Challenge will also count towards
players’ ratings where they already have an
official national rating from the Lawn Tennis Association.
Junior members who show a commitment to playing
matches but do not yet have an official rating will
be given a rating by the club.
Competitions
The club also enters junior teams in various Hertfordshire
leagues and cups. These teams are usually run by
parents. It is vitally important that we offer the
opportunity for juniors to compete for the club.
The club stages an annual Club Closed competition,
open to all junior members. This competition runs
all summer. The club also hosts regular one-day
matchplays, which offer further competitive opportunity
against players from other clubs.
holiday ACTIVITY CAMPS
